As a shareholder and user of this route on more than 100 occasions, I am very unhappy about the decision to close the crossing. Lack of investment has been clear for some time and it simply means P & O have allowed the service to deteriorate. No rael effort has been put into making it more profitable if that is what P & O wants. If the rest of P & O works like this, I do not hold out much hope for the rest of the company anf there will be even more job losses.

P & O have decided that they no longer want this route . Well i think the decision is crap and P & O should rethink. I hve just used this route to le Havre on my way to spain and back. After travelling from BOURGES to le havre  and catching the ferry i had a 10 minute drive to my house and a decent cup of tea.I f i had to go via Calais - dover this would have added another 5 - 6 hours to my journey.   COME ON P & O HAVE A RETHINK IT WILL PAY OFF DIVIDENDS YOU KNOW

Dear P & O I have just come back from my 5th trip to my "home" in Normandy for this year. Normally I would be going again in October but as it happens I cannot. Were I able to go as usual, perhaps you could tell me how I would get there apart from a very long drive Bedford-Dover - Calais- Cabourg; or perhaps the inflated prices offered by Brittany Ferries who will now enjoy the monoply of ferry traffic to the whole of western France - at least for those who can afford it. I shall have to confront this problem sooner or later but will VERY much miss my favourite crossing. As a family we have been supporters since it was Townsend Thoreson and feel very let down. The crews have always been very pleasant and I have enjoyed the small luxury of Club Class towhich I treated myself. Incidentally my son and family came home on September 4th and he said he had never seen it so busy - "heaving" was his description; and my return on Sept 17th was also busy. Yours very sadly

Hermitage, Berkshire. Although we are members of Brittany Ferries Property Owners Club, P&O continually offer better prices than we can get - even with our 1/3 discount. Just returned from Le Havre. Going to Dover is not an option, living only an hour from Portsmouth. Easy to get through France from Le Havre, rather than the long trek across to Dover and down from Calais, which would add 300+ miles to our round trip. Cannot understand why it is being stopped - the boat was full yesterday afternoon.. Very enjoyable meal and friendly crew. Best of luck to them all if they really have to go - but we would prefer to see this service maintained, rather than resulting in a complete monopoly for Brittany Ferries. Do we really want another British service lost to overseas competition....?

We have used this ferry crossing route for the last three years and intend to use it in the future should it continue. We would be very much less likely to use the alternative Dover route and therefore switch to another company to cross the channel at this more convenient depature point.

My wife and myself have been travelling via Le Harve for a number of years. Recently we have been going to Bilbao and returning via Le Havre. The reason for this is that we have friends in the Spanish Basque Country and also friends in south west France (near Pau), who we visit each year and then travel through France to Le Mans, where we have other friends, so it suits us very well to go to Spain and return via Le Havre not Calais, as the journey from Dover to Falkirk is longer and more difficult than from Portsmouth. As a former union official, I object to any loss of jobs for profit. Calais to or from south west France is not an option for us, as we would have to drive through the London area. A better option for us would be from Rosyth to Zeebrugge, saving us 1800 km from Falkirk to Dover and return. We wish you well in your campaign and a reply would be helpful.

I live in Hampshire, UK. I have just made this trip for a week's business south of Paris and was about to recommend it to my family to reach our family house in Provence. With the good motorway to Paris, it is a much better connection than via Calais (3hrs to Fontainebleau vs 4 hrs from Calais, and also 2 hrs less on the UK side). The on-board time is not a problem (we would have gone out overnight and welcomed the relax time after a long drive on the way back. If this route is finally closed, we are very unlikely to go via Calais - probably we will fly and take car hire - a lost customer for P&O, I am afraid.

The last couple of years we have been using P&O again, after seeing BF's fares go up and up, and becoming very very unhappy with having our car damaged time after time due to being herded on to their boats like cattle, with the proverbial gallic shrug. P&O's 'packing density', not to mention fares, attitude and service, have suited us much better, thank you. So it's a bit of a shot in the foot, I think, P&O, to close the le Havre route, since the Dover routes or the Tunnel make little sense if you're heading for Normandy and Brittany.

With the opening of the nearby A28 to Le Mans & Tours now only a few months away, which will reduce journey times to the Loire Valley by at least an hour, it seems a very ill-advised decision to close this ferry route just at this time. This ferry route gives you the widest choice for onward road travel to all parts of France, and the departure times are the most sensible of all routes. Closure will result in a great deal of frustration and inconvenience to the travelling public, as well as hardship and uncertainty for the families of the staff who will be affected by this action. Please keep this route open P&O.

It seems to make absolutely no sense to close this route - Le Havre is an important port and provides excellent connections to other parts of France. The P&O service was excellent on this route - but we will certainly not be travelling with P&O on any other route if this one is closed.

Please, please do not close this valuable route. It is superb for overnight sailings. I have just used this recently and it saved us two days of our holiday. As we live within 10 miles of Portsmouth, it also saves us on petrol in having to travel miles to sail on another ferry, and miles back when in France to areas of Normandy and Brittany and south of France. Not everyone wants to travel to Dover from our area or use the Channel Tunnel, it is such a slog travelling all that way only to travel the same distance back when in France! We have used the Portsmouth/Southampton - Le Havre route regularly since 1963. This year alone we have made 4 crossings, all of them most enjoyable. The ships are comfortable, the service is good and, recently, so is the food in Langan's restaurant. It will be a great loss to us if there is no equivalent service to replace P&O and a cruel blow to the staff on these ferries, who deserve better. It is difficult to believe that the service could not be made more profitable by, for example, reducing the number of crossings in the low season.

It is ridiculous to close a profitable route and abandon not only Le Havre but also other places visited by tourists in the region. j'ai pris cette ligne cet été en venant de Bretagne sud (Lorient), alors que j'aurai pu prendre le ferry soit à St Malo soit à Roscoff. Quand j'ai pris connaissance des prix pratiqués par la Brittany, j'ai évidemment choisi de passer par le Havre. Pour une petite voiture et un passager, on me demandait 820 € par la compagnie concurrente. Si nous ne faisons rien, nous devrons payer 4 fois plus cher pour un même service...c'est de l'arnaque! P & O doit continuer à nous faire traverser la Manche pour saluer nos amis anglais.

Je voyage régulièrement en Angleterre avec P&O depuis 20 ans, et leur disparition de Cherbourg a entraîné une hausse des prix (qui ont triplé) phénoménale, ce qui m'a conduit à partir du Havre, qui est bien plus loin de chez moi. Le départ de P&O du Havre serait préjudiciable non seulement pour la ville, les voyageurs et touristes de la Haute Normandie, mais aussi pour ceux de la Basse Normandie!

This is the best route for us to use and it is a complete pain that P&O want to close it - it takes 1 hour to get to Portsmouth and at Le Havre we are already in the right place to start to visit friends and great places. Cherbourg or Calais is a long ride back on our way home and Dover takes 3 hours on the way out. Please come to your senses and don't ruin our holidays in France by cancelling this route!!

I wish to support this petition. I believe it is eesential for the ferry link wth western france to be served by several carriers docking at various ports, in order to provide choice of destination for the traveller,to spread the revenue from travellers more evenly along the coast and to encourage competitiion between carriers. I believe competition is essential to encourage the provision of high quality competitively priced travel. The present trend could lead to a monopoly being created for travel by ferry to central and western France.

Closure of this service would be very bad for competition on the western channel routes. It is widely understood that Brittany Ferries is subsidised by the french government, but without some competition it seems likely that prices, already very high, would go even higher. I have used this and other P&O ferry routes for many years. It has been very sad to see the deterioration in the ships on the Portsmouth/Le Havre route this year and I understand that it is financially viable to keep the service going. Why close a route that is clearly a viable proposition? It is very convenient for and popular with large parts of the UK population, and no doubt also the same in France, but it certainly appears that P&O have no care for that. There are so few crossings from Portsmouth to France now that it is almost impossible to do a day trip. It takes longer for me to drive to Dover than it does to sail from Portsmouth. I do this trip on an regular basis and am very disappointed that P&O, who are one of the best ferries I have ever travelled on are stopping the route to Le Havre, having already stopped the route to Cherbourg. DON'T DO IT!!!!

C'est inadmissible qu'on ferme cette ligne. J'ai pu découvrir à 2 reprises un pays étranger, l'Angleterre, grâce à elle, & j'en garde de merveilleux souvenirs. J'y suis retournée une 3e fois via le rapide de Dieppe (car j'habitais là-bas à cette époque) : rien à voir. C'est pratique pour les Anglais travaillant en France et vice-versa,mais on n'a pas le temps d'apprécier la traversée. Avec le ferries du Havre, on a l'impression de faire une mini-croisière. Un seul "regret" en lisant cette pétition : peu de Français l'ont signée. Ce serait bien de se manifester & de faire circuler l'information. Ca ne prend pas beaucoup de temps, & permettra (je l'espère) de sauvegarder des emplois et "le peu" de tourisme au Havre & sa région. Bon courage à ceux qui luttent pour leur emploi.

The route between Le Havre/Portsmouth is a great way to travel between France & GB. We used the service in August this year & were really impressed with the staff, on-board facilities, the links at the ports themselves, etc. Please do not axe this service as it is the best of the lot . PLEASE think again - of your customers & your loyal staff not to mention their families & all the ancillary staff eg. restaurants, hotels etc whose jobs are all tied in completely to you not to mention the port of Le Havre itself. Living in Switzerland I visit my sister in the region Southampton regularly by car. The Le Havre-Portsmouth connection is excellent. The figures show that the line is a viable business. Why close down a a working business serving many satisfied customers just to give a few more pounds to greedy shareholders? It's a big shame and a disaster for the loyal members of staff working in Le Havre. Why don't you overthink the decision and show that the P&O line really cares about its customers. We had two excellent sailings in July and August and found that going in to Le Havre from Portsmouth much better that the long drive from Calais. We live in the north of England near Huddersfield and Portsmouth is closer than Dover. Don't lose something that is worth keeping, they made that mistake in Boulogne and are now working hard to rectify that mistake. If it isn't broken don't change it.

I think it is a great shame that P & O are pulling out of the Portsmouth-Le Havre route. It is a service that is indispensible for so many people. Surely one of the main considerations for running any service to the public, is that good relations with the public should be maintained wherever possible. I can only hope that P & O see the error of their ways, or that another company will step in and prove that they can provide a service which is both profitable and satisfies public demand.

I have a theory that the withdrawal of P&O from servicing the Portsmouth - Le Havre route may have a sinister background. Recently Hoverspeed also withdrew the Newhaven- Dieppe Fastcat route. Is it possible that some 'outside' pressure has resulted in the axing of these two routes, which both effectively serviced the mid Normandy coastal areas? The Channel Tunnel continues to lose incredible amounts of cash and this is because there is not sufficient traffic through the Tunnel for it to be viable. Are the British Government trying to force more customers to use the Tunnel route by reducing the route options. I do not know exactly how they might financially compensate P&O and Hoverspeed, but it seems a potentially effective way to improve Tunnel revenues. Perhaps you should ask the question of your employers.

Not long ago we had a choice of reasonably priced ferries to Cherbourg, Le Harve, Dieppe or Caen - now we have to pay Brittany's silly prices or add an extra 250 miles on our journey to travel via Dover (using Sea France, Norfolk Line, Hoverspeed - anyone but P and O). Clearly P and O cares nothing for its customers nor for the devastating effect this could have on the ecconomy of the whole of Normandy.

The way they are heading P&O will soon only be running the Dover/Calais route and will then be at the mercy of Sea France. With regard to the comments on the price of Club seats they are already maximising their profits on the duty/tax free goods. On the Pride of Portsmouth going out we checked the price of 1kg of Golden Virginia at £87.50 (£98.21 equiv in France). On the Pride of Le Havre coming back a week later it was approx. £95. On asking we were told this could not be as the price fluctuated only with the euro (which incidentally had fallen so the tobacco price should have gone down not up). Unfortunately, much as I support this petition, it is probably too little too late as they have already made their decision and I can't see them changing it. The staff at Le Havre have done sterling service over the years and deserve all the support we can give them. Reading some of the messages it would seem that many of the writers are shareholders and it may make more of an impression on P&O if they and all the other travelling shareholders all their shares. Also, if everyone who has signed this petion wrote to the Chairman of P&O as well, as I have done, even if nothing comes of it, at least they will suffer some of the inconvenience they are letting us in for.

Failure to keep this route open can only be bad for tourism in northern France. Brittany Ferries will have a monopoly in the western channel and will be free to increase their already expensive prices when they see fit thus making travel to north-western France either unaffordable or impractical for many people.

And to lose the route to Le Havre just before the motorway links from there to the centre and south of France are due to be completed is incredibly frustrating. As a annual traveller with my family and motorhome the loss of this route will be felt for many years to come,We have had many enjoyable evenings both outward and inbound, met many people at Le Harve port camping for the night and sharing our stories. We,ve enjoyed the shows onboard, and even managed to get some of the questions right when the quiz was held, the children have had fun in the dolfin club and on occasions went to the cinema,my wife would return from duty free asking me to first smell the perfume on the right hand, then the left, then here, then there,but always ended up with her usual brand. A very sad ending for such an excellent route, lets hope with our suport the route will remain, Many thanks to the staff you have been an asset to the company. Rob

As a Deep Sea Pilot, I use the Le Havre to Portsmouth ferry service several time each year, as do all my colleagues (there are about 45 of us) The standard of service has always been excellent ashore and afloat. Le Havre is a major seaport, and needs a ferry service. For myself and my colleagues, and for anyone who needs to travel between the UK and Le Havre, the altenatives will be:- 1. To take a bus to Caen, which is slow and infrequent. 2. To go by train via Paris. This is more time consuming and much more expensive. I hope P & O will reconsider their decision. The loss of the Le Havre to Portsmouth service will be of no benefit to our business, and will will result in increased cost to our customers. Please add my name to your petition. John Hunt

Club Class Seats when we went Portsmouth/le Havre in June/July cost £10 each way. When we cross next week, P & O are demanding £14 per seat, each way. We shall not be paying that amount, so the takings on the sailings will be down. How many others are also refusing to pay. If a shop or business is about to close down, they have a sale, they CUT PRICES. Does the Board of Directors know what they are really doing, or don't they care? There must be plenty of year-round freight business if they bother to look for it, which would pay the way. Other Ferry Companies can do it, AND run more ships, so why not P & O. They seem only interested in "selling the family silver". I have been a Shareholder for ever 20 years, but I am not a rich shareholder "forever bloodthirsty for profits". We have used both the Cherbourg and le Havre Ferry route, run by Thoresen, Normandy Ferries, Townsend Thorresen and P & O every year since 1964. We used le Havre route in June/July, and we are using it in September. We have always had Club Class Seats until this next trip. In June/July the cost per seat was £10 each way, and has been for several years. (Previously £7). For our trip next week, they have put the price per seat UP TO £14 PER SEAT. We will not be paying that, so they will lose more money on the route. What on earth are they playing at? Not good business, and neither is the closure. We will never, ever, pay Brittany Ferries to take us accross the Channel. Their subsidised prices are way out of our pockets. Incidentally, I am a P & O Stockholder, and not a wealthy magnate looking for profits!!! SHAME ON YOU P & O FOR CLOSING THE PORTSMOUTH TO LE HAVRE ROUTE. IT SHOULD BE KEPT OPEN. On ne peut d'une part déclarer développer les échanges internationaux et donc européens, la mobilité professionnelle, le resserrement des liens entre régions européennes voisines (programmes Interreg) et d'autre part décréter la suppression, ou assister passivement, à la suppression d'une liaison régulière locale qui constitue un des vecteurs matériels de premier choix pour le développement d'un bassin d'emploi sinistré (qui le sera encore plus avec la fermeture de la ligne) et l'ouverture de perspectives à une jeunesse en attente de projets ambitieux. Les problèmes posés actuellement par les nouvelles crises ,en particulier dans le domaine de l'énergie, risquent de remettre en cause des choix politiques et économiques reposant sur des analyses déjà dépassées et faire regretter des décisions à court terme motivées uniquement par une course effrénée à la rentabilité immédiate. On a vu dans l'histoire récente la recréation de moyens de transports jugés auparavant désuets comme les tramways , avec tous les surcoûts inutiles en infrastructures qui résultent de leur suppression précédente. On recréera sans doute un jour la ligne de ferries avec un lot de dépenses inutiles, alors pourquoi la fermer aujourd'hui en causant des dommages absurdes à toutes les personnes qui en dépendent économiquement, ainsi qu'à la nouvelle image du Havre pour laquelle le va et vient régulier des ferries constitue un contrepoids indispensable à l'image industrielle donnée par les mouvements des navires de commerce? On n'a pas besoin d'être membre d'un cabinet d'audit prestigieux pour donner un pronostic plus que réservé quant à l'attrait que serait désormais la vue offerte par bord de mer sans ce contrepoids pour d'éventuels clients que compte attirer le groupe ayant investi dans la Villa Maritime et le Casino du Havre. Deauville a encore de beaux jours devant elle dans ce domaine et continuera d'être accessible à la clientèle britannique à partir de Ouistreham!

Nous vivons a Londres et venons tout juste d'investir dans un appartement a Trouville pour y passer nos vacances et weekends. Comme vous pouvez vous l'imaginer, la soudaine fermeture de la liaison Le Havre - Portsmouth est un reel desastre pour nous. Cette liaison nous etait egalement vraiment utile pour visiter ma famille a Paris. Le Shuttle est certes bien pratique, mais pas autant que les P&O ferries. En effet, la route de Boulogne pour rejoindre Paris est de 4 heures...tandis qu'elle n'est que de deux heures du Havres...de plus, la liason nous permettait de voyager de nuit afin de ne pas perdre de temps a voyager de jour. De plus, ce voyage est ideal lorsque l'on a des enfants en bas age. Nous sommes scandalises de lire les riasons de cette possible fermeture! A une epoque ou il est si difficile de creer de l'emploi...vraiment, certains Chefs d'entreprise devraient se poser la question de savoir si de gros profits sont toujours le mieux pour l'avenir.Peut-etre le gouvernement pourrait-il se pencher sur le probleme. Sorry that we didn't learn of this petition earlier, but we returned from France last night and send our signatures in haste. We switched from Brittany Ferries to P&O because of both the convenience of the route and because we preferred the latter's ships. So,for our own sakes and for that of the loyal employees, we hope that the crossing can yet be saved. It seems madness to suppress such a popular route if it's still making a profit - though I suppose that the fact that P&O have announced closure will in itself have reduced the number of customers so no conclusions should be drawn from the most recent figures.

I travelled for the first time on the LeHavre Crossing in August. I booked club class and had wonderfully calm crossings and I am really disappolinted that this ferry will not be available in the future. This is unbelievable. We travelled last Monday night - Sept - hardly the peak time but there were many lorries and cars, and some foot passengers, even on a Monday. Where is all this traffic going to go? Dover is NOT convenient for UK people who do not live in London or the south east and Le Havre is ideal for travelling to many places down the centre of France.

I find it appalling that P and O are to close this route. Having sold the Cherbourg route to Brittany Ferries there will now be no competition whatsoever on the long routes. I understand that during the Summer Brittany Ferries have been running at almost capacity on their routes. And P and O have been consistently running very high figures to Le Havre. So where to all the P and O customers go? Unless Brittany increase their vessels, nowhere !! Its not only the impact on the Le Havre staff that is affected, bad as that is. There is also a huge effect on hotels, shopping and other commercial operations in the area. Come on P and O. See the light and continue the service, rewarding the staff who, despite being under threat of termination, have continued to operate in a professional manner looking after YOUR customers.

Dear P&O, the service to leHavre opens a large area of France to visitors from all over the British Isles. I have used the route for many years and it has provided us with much pleasure. If the route closes it effectively closes an important and convenient route into France, and deprives many people of an affordable and relaxed trip to a beautiful area of France. The alternatives of the tunnel and short ferry routes are not a practical alternative to many UK residents. The effect on the local economy could be catastrophic. After many, many years happy sailing with P&O to Le Harve I'm afraid that the shabby way in which they have treated their employees AND their customers means that I, for one, will travel in future under the slogan of "Don't Go With P&O". We have owned a house in Normandy for the past six years and travel via Le Havre on average ten times a year. If P&O only sail from Calais we will have no choice but to sell our house. This is bad enough for us, but only think of all the jobs that will be lost on both sides of the Channel!

We do not agree with the very high prices P&O were charging for summer trips (£650 2 years ago compared with £238 this year) and the subsidising of day trips by people spending longer abroad. However we can see no reason to close what is a viable route.

After so many years it is ridiculous to be closing the ferry service POLE, especially if the forecasts for this year are up on previous years. Jobs will be lost unnecessarily, and the name of P&O (of which we are shareholders)will suffer a huge blow in terms of prestige (happy to maintain cruises for the rich, but not the more ordinary business of the cross-channel ferries). Why has the company not looked to reduce frequency of sailings, if nothing else? Please keep this link - it is so important for people, whether company workers, or travellers. in peace Graham Cole

The closure will mean that regular travellers to Normandy from the Uk will have very little choice of ferry operators on the western channel. The cost will be prohibitive and the journey via Dover means an extra 180 miles journey from our home in Lancashire to our cottage in Normandy. The passenger figures show that this route is still viable and every effort should be made to retain the service.

Even though I have found the pricing structure rather high compared to some other services, I continue to use the service because the departure and arrival ports are ideal for my destination in france. As a regular user of this service and a concessionary stockholder I am outraged by this decision. As well as using the service regulary to visit my family in Brittany, for the past 9 years a highlight in the run up to Christmas has been a shopping trip to Le Havre. For the summer hols I have always used P&O when travelling the Dover route, not any more. Norfolk Line has my custom now. If they think we are going to forget this disgraceful decision and dutifully continue to use them at Dover they must be seriously deluded.

What is the problem with this route? If it is really so unprofitable, I wonder whether the Le Havre and Portsmouth City Councils could not be persuaded to provide some support, as I believe Dieppe has done in chartering one of the Transmarche Ferries boats sailing from Newhaven. There are lots of people like me who don't want to stand around in an airport departure lounge for hours or stand up in a goods truck in the tunnel. Please try harder to keep this route and avoid a Brittany Ferries monopoly.

I have been a regular traveller with P&O on the Portsmaouth LeHavre route over the last 16 years and am a shareholder. I deplore the closing of this route which permits people who live on the western side of the UK easy access to the south of France without the additional hassle of getting to Dover. I cannot imagine why, after putting so much into the infrastructure of this route, P&O are prepared to shut it down resulting in the loss of jobs and supporting businesses

My family and I go to France for holiday and usually use the Normandy connections. Last year, the Newhaven- Dieppe link was discontinued. Dear P&O, I am writing to express my anger and sorrow at the proposed axing of the Portsmouth to Le Havre route. This route is financially viable and there has been an increase from last year's figures in the number of passengers, passenger vehicles and freight vehicles travelling on this route. A very healthy profit has been made over the past two years. How greedy can share-holders become? We have been taking the ferry to Le Havre several times a year for the past twenty-six years. professional links and friendships have been established and from these exchanges I personally know of several french and english students who have gone on to take their degrees in each other's countries. Le Havre has been declared a UNESCO heritage site which reflects its importance both architecturally and as a port. I have two properties in France (one at Honfleur in Normandy)for letting to holiday makers, mainly British, and many of my clients use the Portsmouth to Le Havre route as it's the closest, requiring far less driving for those not used to 'driving on the right'. If this route is making a profit and is projected to even improve its profits, it makes absolutely no sense to terminate it. If P&O as a group decided to plunge any capital released into another project, what guarantees would there be that such new project would be successful or indeed make any profit. I suggest that P&O Ferries take a long hard look at their decision and reconsider it before another ferry company walks in after its termination and takes it over for nothing. The company should also remember that its formation was primarily to operate ferries, not other ventures. Regards, Brian Ashley

By far the most convenient crossing, especially at night when we drive to Spain. It allows a full day's driving in France. Portsmouth/Le Havre also makes for a superb day out, leaving Portsmouth in the morning and coming back overnight. Invest in the facilities at either end and even more people will flock to this route - it is a potential money-spinner, given some investment.

We're from the North of England and it's much better for us to travel from Portsmouth than say Dover (so we can avoid London/M25). Le Havre is an ideal port to arrive at, especially with the new Pont de Normandie bridge making it easier to travel south. P & O should not be axing this viable and profitable service. Good luck!

I have just returned from France on 23rd Aug. We have always sailed with P & O, usually on the Portsmouth Cherbour crossing. It was most disappointing to learn that this crossing no longer operates, so we had to use the Portsmouth LeHavre crossing instead. We have a cottage in Normandy, and have always used P & O, this is our preference to Brittany Ferries. On our return we learned that this sailing is also to be closed. This is extremely disappointing and will only lead to Brittany Ferries being able to charge what they like for the crossings to France as there will be no competition on the prices. When you compare the cost of the sailing for the summer an open return with Brittany through August was priced at £450. compared to the open return fare we obtained with P & O which cost £160. This goes to show how much Brittany will be ripping the passengers off. The price quoted by P & O was not a special deal to coax you away from Brittany ferries as we only paid approx £200 on the Portsmouth Cherbourg crossing last year for an open return and that was using the fast cat.too. I really do hope that P & O can keep the crossings to France as they are the better company on both price and service.

The loss of this ferry route, as with the loss of the cherbourg route will greatly reduce capacity on the western chanel crossings and lead to either higher prices or more importantly a lack of choice. For the last few years we have stopped using brittany ferries as they never have enough overnight cabins available whereas P&O do. We wish you luck to keep this route open even with an an alternative operator. If the route stays open we will use it (currently five or six times a year.

THe cossing is usefull for people who have had to travel a long way either side of the channel. The night crossing is useful for these people. In getting rid of the crossing will put more people onto using the Tunnel

Have just used this route and was unaware of the closure proposal until reading the notice on the return leg. Have used this route several times before, unlike other signatories I have no particular preference for this one over Caen or Cherbourg (although thats now been closed by P&O). The real danger is that now all competition to Brittany Ferries will be removed and the laws of supply and demand will lead inevitably to a substantial price hike. If P&O no longer have the stomach for operating this route please, please someone like "Norfolk Line" step in and keep it going.

We used the route only this summer, it is a most convenient and enjoyable route from Dorset where we live to the Isle de France. Any one living in the SW of England has reason to bemoan the steady "rationalisation" of the West Channel ferry routes. Flying and hiring a car is not an ecologically sensitive alternative to the ferry. Oh yes - from a purely selfish point of view, giving Brittany ferries a monopoly on this route is unlikely to result in a price drop. Good luck with your campaign!

It is also the most convenient for those living in the south of England and for many from further afield. The parent company seems intent on leaving the field (or, should I say, the sea) wide open for Brittany Ferries, sacrificing a viable ferry route because of financial difficulties in other aspects of its business and showing scant regard for its workers or the customers using the Portsmouth - Le Havre route. Shutting the route between Ports-Le Havre will mean that Brittany Ferries has no competition and can hack up prices accordingly. Don't let them do this. I used the ferry again for my own holiday in August. It will be an enormous shame to stop the service. It must be allowed to continue! What are P&O ferries thinking?!

I have just come back on the La Harve crossing and found, as i have over the last 20 years, this is the most convenient crossing for me. How can P&O close this route when each time i have crossed (usually 8 times a year) the ferry has either been full or almost full??? P&O needs to consider its customers requirements!!!

I believe the closure of the ferry indicates a failure of the management of P&O to see further into the future than their accountants. The loss of another shipping line in Portsmouth and the UK is also bad for the local economy who have a great pride in the naval and commercial shipping in Portsmouth. This will be another blow to the already depleted shipping from this great and historic city.

The best route by far, it allows a very pleasant day out in Le Havre or Honfleur and the overnight from Portsmouth allows a full day's driving in France, which we do each year en route to Spain. A little investment in the terminals at each end will turn this route into a money-spinner.

We have just returned from France and found the staff very friendly and helpful. The food and service in the restaurant was excellent and the staff very efficient. This route has not been advertised properly ( on purpose? )and we only heard that it was still running from friends who are frequent travellers to their homes in France. We went Dover/Calais earlier this year - never again. Please keep this ferry running and think about all the people who will suffer at its closure. Travellers, staff, port staff, and Portsmouth & Le Harve towns. Incidently, why are you now advertising the route in the September issue of the Camping & Carvan Club magazine when the service is to be withdrawn.?

I offer my support to the petition - save the ferry route Portsmouth-Le Havre. I had been surprised to hear the news some weeks ago about the decision to close Portsmouth-Le Havre route. I am glad to hear of the petition in the hope that the decision can at least be reconsidered and possibly reversed, especially when P&O realise that so many people feel so passionate about the continuation of and demand for this route. Having lived in Kent in 1980s-1990s and vowed never to use the Tunnel (always used Dover-Calais) and now living back in South England, it has been a pleasure to use Portsmouth-Le Havre route once again. We returned to England via Le Havre to Portsmouth yesterday - benefits included a relaxing and pleasant journey across the Channel as a finale to the holiday, with easy access from our last port of call in France (approx. 100 km away from Le Havre), as well as an easy journey home on arrival in Portsmouth last night. P&O need to be urged and persuaded to think again and remember that its services must meet the demands and needs of the customers, as well as considering its employees and the ferry ports. If P&O need to make cuts, perhaps they need to research amongst its customers and potential customers to adjust their timetable to meet demand and requirements, as well as ensuring that prices are competitive to encourage choice and use of the service. The loss of the Portsmouth-Le Havre route would not mean just a monetary saving to P&O - it would also mean the loss of many Jean Cornhill

As a person who has used the Portsmouth/Le Havre route at least once every year for the past 22 years when going on holiday to France I am saddened by P&O's actions.They have shown no thoughts for the people who have supported them over the years or the people who work for them. Their only concern seems to be the pockets of shareholders. The figures released with regard to passengers and freight are not the reasons for the closure as they are improving figures. The reasons can only be that P&O want to make a QUICK BUCK at the expense of their employees and supporters. I can make alternative bookings for my holidays by using the Dover/Calais route but will have to add to my driving time and distance. The people employed by P&O will have bigger problems than me as they have to find employment in a country that is experiencing greater unemployment all the time! It is apparent that no consideration whatsoever has been given to the loyal passengers and businesses who regularly use the Portsmouth-Le Havre Ferries, let alone the staff on the route. I cannot believe that P&O cannot make money on this route. Their failure to do so is due to a poor marketing and pricing strategy. This is a classic example of a business controlled from London where the officials do not understand their customers or their business. They are closing the western routes to concentrate on the Dover - Calais crossings, but nobody who uses the routes being closed would ever go via Dover. These ships should be filled all year round with caravans and short-term travellers who would stay locally in the north and west of France if they could pay a more reasonable fare. It has been clear for some time that the fare structure has been increased in order to reduce the amount of traffic and so justify the closure of the routes. Instead of spending the money on closing the routes P&O should invest in a proper marketing strategy and employ sales directors who could concentrate on the unique opportunities that this business affords. They should be closing Dover instead of Portsmouth/Cherbourg/Le Havre.

Le Havre is an excellent route. When it stops we will use Brittany Ferries to Caen or maybe the Danish entrepreneur who has started a line Dover-Calais will take it on and give P&O a bloody nose. Either ways, I suspect P&O will have lost a customer. Bob

J'habite en Angleterre depuis 1989 et j'utilise la ligne P&O Le Havre Portsmouth depuis toujours. Cette ligne est parfaite pour les visites familiales que je fais regulierement a Rouen. As a camper and someone who intends to keep visiting France with a tent in order to have the freedom to go where I like and when I like the idea of not being able to use the ferry is highly worrying. We live in Bristol, hate travelling on the crowded British road system, especially the M25, and Portsmouth enables us to board the ferry within two hours of British roads. The intention to close this ferry will effect a lot of people like myself, fast approaching the third age - more leisure, more hope of European travel - and will adversely effect the livelihoods of a lot of people whose businesses and whose employment are integrally connected with this ferry. I urge the company to look at other ways of addressing financial difficulties without closing this route altogether.

I have used P&O Ferries (and earlier European Ferries) for almost 30 years, and I cannot understand the thinking behind the move to withdraw from the longer Channel crossings. The PO-LE route provided great convenience for people travelling from the west of England and the west of France, and reduced traffic on the roads in the north of France and the South-East of England. Costs could easily have been cut by not having a cinéma or night club. This would have helped to lower fares and stimulate more traffic.

We used to use P&O to Cherbourg, but they closed that. We also use P&O to Le Havre, now they are going to close that. When the ferries pulled out of Boulogne, it was a disaster, and it looks as though P&O want to wreck Le Havre....However, please remember NOT ALL the Shareholders want profits - some benefit from reduced price crossings - but only some who have held shares foe a long while, so P&O want to cut benefits to its own shareholders as well!!!

Les ferries c'est l'image du Havre, quand on arrive vers le port leurs silhouettes nous apporte le rêve de la mer. C'est le point de départ d'une petite croisière vers un pays ami. This route offers a good service that can compete financially with the channel tunnnel and Brittany Ferries. It offers the only route to this area, so that a longer drive is not necessary (if you have a car). When we have used the route, the boat has been consistently full, and enjoyed by passengers. It seems madness to cut one of the few crossing points of the channel. As well as an important employer for the 2 ports.

As both a customer and a Shareholder I strongly disagree with the decision to close the Portsmouth - Le Harve Ferry. How can it possibly make sense to close a profitable route which is very much valued by its customers? I do hope that P & O will re-consider their decision. Good luck to all the staff and crews in their efforts to preserve their jobs.

Etant habitant du havre je trouve ca génial de pouvoir aller se dépayser outre Manche. Il serait vraiment dommage de ne plus pouvoir le faire, surtout a un prix relativement bas!

Please reconsider. The ferry has been full to capacity the past 4 times I have travelled and increasing numbers of French people seem to be using the service too. Perhaps you would consider running it only during the summer if you cannot maintain a full service? Please think again!

How dare P&O close the Portsmouth Le Havre crossing when their logo is "when it matters" . When you live up North, it is so convenient to drive down to Portsmouth have a night's sleep on the ferry and be fresh to continue the journey down South.

The P and O Ferry routes from Portsmouth are used by so many people both from the South of England and from further afield. We have travelled P and O from Portsmouth several times a year for the last 15 years. With a caravan this is an ideal route from us rather than a long journey to Dover on very busy M3 and M25 roads. Please reconsider and keep the route open not just for the sake of your passengers but also for your numerous personnal who will be out of a job.

tres bien p&o.(pardon moi anglais) I have travelled on p&o to france twice, once dover calais and once portsmouth le havre. i prefer le havre.the staff were more polite and seemed upset that the ferrie port may loose p&o they were still charming to me and since im a seasick 13 year old that may seem hard to do. i love p&o please dont shut them down. its the only way i can get to france as although i have a phobia of boats and planes the staff on potsmouth le havre calmed me down planes still manage to scare me!

Just came home on the Le Havre - Portsmouth boat today, saw the sign at Le Havre (Calais 277km)thats after driving nearly 550km to Le Havre thats a hell of a long way. Sorry to say this but P & O do not seem to care about the needs of the customers and appear to have no resposibility towards the people they employ or those that are employed indirectly as a result of the ferry services run by them. PLEASE keep the LeHavre route open. Its closure will cause extreme inconvenience and expense to many loyal P&O passengers travelling to and from French west channel ports. Why not replace costly big ferries with a no frills service on more enonomical vessels? Dont let us down.

This is a very convenient route for western France. We had an excellent trip aboard the Pride of Le Havre last week. Good price and ecellent service from the crew. Please keep it open. The alternative of Calais/tunnel would add over 400 miles to the trip
